Team of the Week – Week 20

Division 5 Men travelled to Glasnevin; we found ourselves 12 points down in the 3rd quarter and we managed to come back to tie the game up with 16 seconds left. Unfortunately we conceded a foul and 1 out 2 from the line was enough to give Glasnevin the win. Our top Scorer was Lorenzo Angilini with 22 points. We have 3 games left and 2 wins will secure a second place finish and promotion to Division 4.

Big win for Division 2 Men as we finished off the league season with an 85-70 win away to St.Vincent’s. A strong 4th quarter saw us pull clear to win comfortably after a close game. Darragh O’Neill lead the scoring with 32 points. The win secures 3rd place finish with a record of 11 wins and 5 defeats and we have clinched our place in the final 4. We will play St Vincent’s again in the Semi Final at the end of April.

U16 Girls came face to face again with DCU mercy , last game we played against them we lost in extra time so we knew we had to work a little harder on defending and pin point particular players who we needed to stop putting scores up. We started off strong offensively, Got a few scores for Abbey O’Looney and Tara O’Doherty and Kerrie O’Neill. On defense we started with our zone defense , As the game went on we decided as a team to go into a man , we needed more intense defense , which is what we got . We got some lovely rebounds from Patricia and we got the ball moving up court as quick as we could. We got lovely scores from fast breaks. Really good team work both defensively and offensively. Very happy with the girls performance, which in the end we got a lovely 9 point win!

Huge improvement from the girls since day one! Very happy with the progress they have been making throughout the year!

U17 Boys travelled out to St Davids to take on Killester on Saturday. The 1st Quarter was very competitive with Oblates, going basket for basket, showing great team work in defence and patience against the Killester press. The 2nd quarter saw a drop in level from Oblates that allowed Killester to get away on the scoreboard. Overall a much improved performance. Well done fellas!

U15 Boys played their final game of the season at home on Saturday evening. Over all coach Lynn was pleased with the boys performance. They gave everything they had against Ongar but just fell short. It was a tough but enjoyable season with these enthusiastic bunch of great young lads. They will now have a couple of weeks rest before they get back to training.  A special mention and Thank You to Team Manager Natasa for all her hard work for the team. Lynn and the Boys really appreciate it.

This weeks team of the week definitely has to go to our CUP CHAMPIONS SENIOR 3 LADIES and Senior 1 Ladies and of course the OBLATE ARMY!!

Senior 1 Ladies won a thrilling Senior Cup Final after over-time at the Dublin Ladies Board Cup Finals in Inchicore last weekend. An end-to-end game saw both teams finish after regulation but after five minutes of over-time Oblates ran out 4 point winners 67-71 over Killester.

It was an even start to the game with both teams trading scores back and forth, however, Oblates started to pull away near the end of the first quarter with scoring from Jennifer Sheehan and Alison Keech forcing Killester into an early first half time-out.

The time out didn’t stop Oblates momentum though as they finished the quarter strong leading 20-13. The first half pattern continued with Oblates keeping their opponents at bay while also adding to their lead in the second. Scores came from all over the floor with substitutions from both teams coming in and keeping the fast-paced game moving well. The quarter came to an end with Oblates adding to their first quarter tally to lead at half 26-37.

Killester knew they would have to focus and chip away at the score in the second half if they were to get back into this Senior Cup Final. Catriona White and Mae Creane hit vital shots in the third to get the Northside team back in the game, while the team stepped up on the defensive end to allow Oblates only 6 points in the third quarter. Killester had clawed the deficit back to go into the court quarter only 2 points behind (41-43).

An ened to end fourth quarter saw both teams trade the lead time and time again with free-throws proving to be vital in this thrilling encounter. Both teams ended over the foul limit meaning every foul would result in a trip to the free-throw line, both teams held their nerve hitting shot after shot to end this match in a draw and send the bout to over-time.

It was Oblates who would gain the lead in the extra period and not look back taking their lead right to the end of the game. Killester were forced to foul resulting in Ellie Thornton and Jennifer Sheehan icing the game from the free-throw line to seal the victory for Oblates.

Having lost to Tolka twice in the league Senior 3 Ladies knew coming into the game what it was we had to do and with Martha coming back for the game we had a full squad available for the game.

In front of a packed crowd the girls stormed into the lead, we controlled our boards both ends of the court which is what we needed to do, the defence and patience saw us well in control of the game and it looked like the win was ours but then the lights went out and our game was abandoned with 1.59 on the clock in the 3rd quarter. It was devastating that the girls couldn’t celebrate their performance and we had to wait until Tuesday to complete the task, the girls seemed more nervous on Tuesday but the support from the club and the bench we brought home the gold with a final score line of 57-32. Special word of thanks to Fr. Patsy, the army of support and to the girls themselves, nothing nicer than drinking prosecco from a Cup. Huge thank you to everyone who donated to or volunteered at the shop this weekend! Also to Mark for taking pictures of both the Senior 3 & Senior 1 match, they are over on our Facebook Page.

A huge thank you to; everyone who volunteered at the shop, Mark for taking pictures of both the games, Ciaran for the fantastic report for the Senior 1 Ladies Gand of course the OBALTE ARMY the girls couldn’t of done it without you!

Coach Staunton – ‘The crowd got us over the line in the end, a wonderful day for the girls and the whole club’

Coach Prendergast – ‘Special word of thanks to Fr. Patsy, the army of support’
