Team of the Week – Week 17

Senior 3 Women played Glasnevin, with a slow start to the game we finished the first quarter with a 4 point lead but struggled on defence in the second quarter and we found ourselves 2 points down at the half. With a change of defence to man we upset the rhythm of the Glasnevin ladies, and outscored them 20-14 in the 3rd quarter. A very tense and bruising affair but the girls never relented. With 36 seconds to go we found ourselves 4 points down but that is certainly a long time in a basketball game as with a massive defensive rebound, a magical 3 point and then a massive offense rebound, we took the win by 1. OMG nerves of steel and pure grit from the girls, final score 53-52.

U13 Boys cup semifinal game on Saturday was forfeited and oblates are now through to final against lions in March.

U15 Boys had a tough match this weekend against top of the table Dublin Sonics. Sonics started off the quicker in the game getting a lot of fast break buckets, once the lads countered the fast break from Sonics their set defence proved to be excellent and hard to fight through. Using their tough defence the boys quickly turned to offence were they would try and pull back the lead Sonics opened up in the first quarter. Some fantastic inside work kept the score ticking over and the lads pushed for the win at the end but just came up short and could not pull back the deficit from a poor first quarter. Stand in Coach for the day Ciaran O’Doherty thought the fast paced end to end game which ended in 3 quarters being tied was a brilliant to watch and more people should get down to watch this Team.

The U16 Girls lost away to Templeogue on Sunday by 12 but that doesn’t do them justice so instead of a match report let me tell you a little about this group of warriors. We total 8 players  (3 are u15). We’ve been down to 7 available the past few weeks due to injury and that became 6 before halftime on Sunday. Every week they battle against teams of 12 with every player taller than them but never give in. This season they have become a tight-knit group of sisters by always turning up to training and fighting the opposition as a TEAM. There’s a lot if talent too but I believe it’s their attitude that has really impressed anyone that’s seen them play including many parents of other teams that have commented on this quality. They’ll have lots of winning seasons in the years ahead because of the graft they’re putting in now so keep it up ladies and remember it is often in the darkest skies that we see the brightest stars.

U17 Boys welcomed Liffey Celtics to the Oblate Hall on Sunday morning for a league encounter. Oblate’s got off to a slow start offensively in this game and really didn’t get going until the 4th quarter. Although the offence was miss-firing there was a marked improvement in defence, with help and recover working well and forcing Celtics deeper into their shot clock. Although not reflected in the scoreline, there are seeds of improvement beginning to germinate with this team. Keep it up!

U18 Girls had an early start with an away game on Sunday morning against Lifey Celtics. We started well in  the first quarter with good Defence and patience on offence. The gap was at 1 pt. Lapses in concentration left the home team up by 12 at half time. With a change of Defence and intensity the gap was narrowed going into the 4th. We just needed to up the intensity a little more but couldn’t do this in the 4th. Some nice displays of good offence and hard work on Defence just need to keep it up for longer.

It was the U12 Girls second last home match of the season on Sunday against Northside Eclipse.  The Oblate girls got off to a slow start and they allowed some easy baskets but they eventually settled and picked up their defence and started to convert turnovers, the first half ended 17 – 17.  The second half saw the Oblate girls rebound the ball well but despite their hard work and fight Northside Eclipse proved to be too strong and won by 6 points.

This weeks ‘Team of the Week‘ goes to the U15 Girls:

Our U15 girls were at home on Sunday against Firhouse. The girls were very slow to start; missing some easy baskets and some lapses in concentration in the first quarter. From the start of the second quarter the girls stepped up their defence and this transitioned into their offence. It was a super all round performance from the whole team. The girls came out strong winners with a score of 60-22. Well done everybody. The support today was brilliant and thank you to Aoife and Patricia for doing table duty
