Ciara White’s U16 Irish Team Journey

Ciara and her team left Dublin for Skopje, Macedonia on the 15th of August to start her European Championship Journey.

The team firstly played Slovenia to kick off their group phase games, despite losing, there was super defense across the board from the Irish team and shots weren’t dropping for them at the other end.

Game 2 saw Ireland face Moldova and drove home to a comprehensive victory, winning 89-15 point winners in the end.

Ireland then played tournament favorites, Belgium for game 3. Unfortunately the girls had to settle for second best in the face of a classy Belgium side. Ciara White and her teammates never gave up and left it all on the court!

Game 4 of the group phase saw Ireland take on tournament hosts Macedonia, a huge defensive fourth quarter from Ireland kept the home side to just 5 points in the period – Ciara continued to shine and Ireland drove home with the win 72-54.

Ireland had a super first half display which just wasn’t enough for Ireland as the fell short in a loss against Ukraine in their final pool game at this year’s FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship Division B in Skopje.

It was confirmed that Ireland would take on Estonia in the 9-16th place classification games. After a huge first quarter performances across the board saw 15 points inside early, scores from Ciara put Ireland up 26-10 ahead by the first buzzer. The fourth quarter saw the respective defenses get on top early on. White added scored and the game was put beyond sight for the Estonians, as the final buzzer sounded on a 70-45 point win for the Irish.

Ireland advanced to the 9-12th classification game where the faced Switzerland. A huge third quarter display from the girls in green set them on the road to glory with superb defense across the team and Ciara adding some brilliant scores. Ireland kept their cool to hold a 57-53 point victory.

Final game of the FIBA U16 European’s and the girls took on Israel, in what was a roller coaster of a ride for the squad, a third quarter run by Israel saw Ireland on the back foot going into the last and the mountain was just too much to climb for them as Israel kept their cool to hold out and win. Brilliant stuff from the team as they took 10th place! Well Done Girls, amazing stuff!
