Community Games Finals

The Drimnagh/Inchicore Boys U13 basketball team had an eventfully trip to the National Finals. Winning the Dublin title in April and then beating Kildare and Longford to win the Leinster title. Winning the Leinster title earned them the right to attend the National Community Games Festival that took place in Athlone Institute of Technology on the weekend of 22/23 August.
The team consists of local players from the U13 and U12 Oblate Basketball Club Boys Team in Inchicore. They where coached by Oblate U17 team Captain Ciaran O’Doherty. In the Semi Final the boys took on the winners of the Connaght title, St Feihins from Sligo. The game was close until the final quarter when the boys took control and ran out winners on a score line of 40-28.
In the final the team would face Rathmore from Kerry, who won there semi final against Ballyshannon from Donegal.
The first quarter of the final was a nervous one for both teams. Facing a sizable and noisy crowd both team found the going tough in the 1st quarter. Inchicore held a narrow lead 6-5 going into the 2nd quarter.
Without doubt the 2nd quarter belonged to Rathmore, they settled into the game more had started to produce some great “fast break” scores. They where up 17-10 at half time. Inchicore/Drimnagh looked in trouble but could they mount a comeback?
The opening few plays of the third quarter did not look good for the Dublin boys as Rathmore continued scoring. The difference now was that the Dubliners where also scoring baskets. A big 3 pointer for Dublin changed the moment of the game and the comeback was on. End of the 3rd quarter Kerry 24- Dublin 21.
With the crowd noise levels now reaching record levels as both sets of supporters cheering on their team, every play proved vital. In the end it came down to free throws. With Dublin attacking the basket Rathmore where forced to foul and put Dublin on the free thow line. However Dublin stood up to the test of nerve and scored 4 out of 6 of their freethrows to win by a single point.
Great celebrations at the end of a fantastic game and competition. That was played in great spirit and sportsmanship. A great experience for everyone involved.
Ciaran would like to  thank  everyone involved – players, parents, supporters, Mark, Niamh, Tom Lucas & Jen Doyle
