Leinster Champions

Friday, July 13th, 2012
Drimnagh /Oblate Centurions U16 boys travelled to Carlow to represent Dublin last Saturday and compete in the Leinster community games basketball finals.
Their first opponents was Longford who have a strong basketball tradition, but they were no match for our boys who ran out a 15pt win in a very one sided affair.
The other semi final saw Carlow against Portlaoise. This was a fast and physical game that went right down to the wire. Portlaoise managed to win and would be Drimnagh’s next opponent in the final.
Coach, Sean, was worried that the team could not match up to the physical Portlaoise side, as our starting center was on holidays, another player had a bad chest infection and a third player being only 12 years old, our 8 man squad didn’t look like Leinster champions on paper.  But basketball doesn’t get played on paper and a determined Centurions side took the floor with a golden twinkle in their young eyes.  Portlaoise on the other hand had other ideas about how this final would turn out, and walked onto the floor confident and eager.
From the opening tip off we  fell quickly behind by two baskets, a 3pt shot by Portlaoise number 8 point guard followed quickly by another sloppily defended basket, and that was just for starters.  We struggled to keep up with the midland team and were down 11 points within the first 7 minutes.  Coach Sean  had to call a time out and re-organize a leaky defence.  Scribbling frantically on his strategy board he rallied his troops and turned a 5 man mess into a wall, which Portlaoise found increasingly difficult to penetrate. Centurions clawed back points from a more and more frustrated Portlaoise team, and went in at the half only 5 points down and with the momentum clearly in our favour thanks to a massive blocked 3pt shot by star of the finals Stephen Kelly.  Even though down at the half, the team all felt that the win was there for the taking.
The second half started much the same as the first half finished with the Centurion lads making Portlaoise work for every basket and punishing every mistake with a score on the other end.  The 5 points that Portlaoise took into the second half proved not enough to hold back an ever more confident Drimnagh side, and with Portlaoise getting into foul trouble early in the second half the Leinster trophy was slipping away and into the hands of the Dublin team.  The Drimnagh team pushed on through the second half spurred on by their great supporters that travelled with them, and ran out 8 point winners when the final whistle sounded.
Drimnagh/Oblate Centurions are now the community games U16 Basketball champions for Leinster and will go on to represent Dublin in the all Ireland finals in Athlone on the 24th of August. This is the furthest the Drimnagh boys have ever got, so lets get to Athlone to support the lads.
Team: (back row) coach Sean McLoughlin,14 Stephen Kelly, 15 Nathan Keech, 8 Jack Fitzgerald, 13 Ian Ligason. (front row) 5 Jack Johnson, 4 John Moloney, 6 Laurence Ligason, 7 Lee Puchon.
