Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Oblate Dynamos claimed the Basketball Ireland Women’s Division One League Final on Saturday after a hard fought 53-49 win over Scruffy St Paul’s at the National Basketball Arena.

Dynamos secured the crown with ‘MVP’ Tammy McKenna claiming two big three pointers in the closing stages to swing the tie in favour of Greg Petrovic’s side.

“We kept them to 53 points so I was very pleased with our defensive display, said Petrovic. “It was a very difficult game at times but we managed to hit form when it mattered most. The team deserve this win, it should give everyone a boost and it’s a fantastic day for the club.”

A tentative start saw Oblate take the lead through Michelle Hynes before the basket was cancelled out by St Pauls’ Catriona O’Connell from the free throw line. Shelly Behan edged the Dubliners ahead with a superb three but Pauls always managed to stay in a quarter dominated by indiscipline with 15 fouls shared between the two teams.

Oblates took a slender 16-14 lead into the second quarter and extended their advantage with Tanya McGrath scoring inside, while Ellie Curran maintained their good run, converting after a powerful move inside before going to the line for the bonus point. However, indiscipline was costing Oblates dear as St Pauls lead at the break by a solitary point (24-23) with 18 of their points coming from the free throw line.

The third quarter was a livelier affair with St Pauls striking first with Maire Guiney converting after penetrating strong to the basket before Mairead Finnegan continued St Pauls brightest spell of the game with a basket seconds later. Oblates refused to panic and restored parity at 34-34 courtesy of baskets from Michelle Hynes and Theresa Smith. A basket from McGrath swung the pendulum in favour of Oblates but success from the free throw line for Guiney ensured the game was tied at 37-37 heading into the final quarter.

St Pauls were first off the mark in the final quarter with a lovely spin move to the basket by Maire Guiney. Oblates’ hopes were hampered when Head Coach Petrovic was ejected from the Arena after picking up his second technical foul. St Pauls capitalized with Catriona O’Connell converting a three but a dogged Oblates remained in close pursuit with a three from Georgina McKenna.

A huge three from Tammy McKenna brought Oblates to within a point of their opponents before another sensational three from McKenna saw Oblates take the lead in the dying seconds. The win was confirmed with Georgina McKenna converting from the free throw line to give the club a famous league success.
